Overview

This 45-credit research master's program trains specialists in forest ecosystem ecology for doctoral study or professional roles involving the detection, analysis, and resolution of problems in forest ecosystem management. Core activity areas include forest, agricultural, and restoration ecology. The 15-credit core curriculum covers introduction to research in natural sciences, a research proposal, analysis and modeling of ecological data, community engagement, and scientific communication, culminating in a 30-credit research thesis (memoire); six additional credits are chosen as electives from courses such as dendroecology, complex-data analysis, plant-biomass transformation processes, and geographic information systems. Admission requires an undergraduate degree in biology or a related field with a minimum cumulative average of 3.2 on 4.3, and candidates must secure an agreement in principle with a qualified thesis supervisor before admission. Full-time students complete the program in two years; part-time completion takes up to four years. Graduates earn a Maitrise es sciences.

Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree or the equivalent in biology or a related field, with a cumulative average of at least 3.2 on 4.3; candidates with an average between 2.8 and 3.2 may be reviewed by the admission subcommittee. Candidates without the required academic background but with relevant knowledge, training, and experience may be admitted on an experience basis. All candidates must secure an agreement in principle with a professor or supervisor qualified to direct a thesis before admission, submit the name of their chosen research supervisor, a 300-word text describing their achievements and motivations, and undergo an admission interview if the subcommittee deems it relevant. Program capacity is not limited (non-contingente).
