Overview
This Bachelor of Arts in Arts and Design offers theoretical and practical training across three disciplines: visual arts, comics, and graphic design, with students choosing one as their concentration. The visual arts stream develops individual and collective artistic production through specialized studio workshops and community engagement; the comics concentration trains students in varied graphic and narrative approaches while building responsiveness to industry demands; and the graphic design stream prepares visual-communication specialists attentive to social, cultural and environmental change. The 90-credit program runs over six terms, full-time or part-time, at the Gatineau campus, combining courses shared across all three concentrations with 9 credits of electives and 6 credits of enrichment courses, and closing with capstone synthesis courses in the final term. The program emphasizes critical thinking, contemporary societal engagement, collaborative skills, and professional autonomy across all three disciplines rather than treating them as entirely separate tracks. Admission Requirements: Admission runs through three pathways. From a Quebec DEC or equivalent, or with at least 15 completed university credits and a cumulative average of 2.2/4.3, applicants qualify academically; those without a background in visual arts, comics, or graphic design must additionally submit a portfolio. A work-experience pathway accepts applicants who show relevant knowledge of and interest in visual arts, comics, or graphic design, supported by a CV and portfolio. The portfolio, required of all non-arts-background applicants, is a single PDF of up to 15 images of the candidate's work with a descriptive list of title, techniques, materials, and completion year; video, animation, or web pieces are linked inside the PDF via platforms such as YouTube, Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive. All applicants must demonstrate sufficient French through the DEC's provincial French exam, UQO's own test, or an equivalent francophone-university exam. Application Deadline:UQO currently publishes deadlines only for the term now open, which as of mid-September 2026 is winter 2027 entry. Domestic applicants (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) apply directly to UQO: regular undergraduate and certificate programmes close 1 December 2026, while co-operative-education bachelor's programmes and all graduate programmes close 15 October 2026, with admission decisions issued from August onward. International applicants had an earlier cut-off of 1 August 2026 for winter 2027 entry; as of the fetch date that window has already closed for most programmes, and several programmes are not open to international applicants for this term at all. UQO has not yet published fall 2027 dates, and none of these deadlines are rolling; all are firm cut-offs. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
