This 45-credit Master of Arts offers literary research centred on criticism and the exploration of English-language literature, spanning Canadian, American, British and postcolonial writing alongside literary theory. The program treats literature written in English as a cultural force, with emphasis on modern and contemporary works and cultural studies approaches. All courses are taught entirely in English, and students may pursue the degree full-time or part-time, with full-time completion estimated at two years. Admission is open in fall and winter. The program builds close-reading, critical and research-writing skills through a mix of seminars and independent research, preparing graduates for doctoral study, teaching, publishing, or other work requiring advanced literary analysis in English. Because instruction is in English, the university sets English-proficiency requirements for non-native speakers alongside the usual academic prerequisites for admission.
