Overview
The PhD in Anthropology trains researchers to examine the social and cultural foundations of human groups and to contribute to understanding contemporary issues through advanced anthropological research. Specializations range from Indigenous studies to the anthropology of health. The 90-credit programme is estimated to take four years of full-time study and is centred on an original doctoral thesis. Applicants must hold a master's degree in anthropology or an equivalent qualification; candidates from other disciplines may be admitted but may need to complete up to 30 credits of non-contributory preparatory coursework. A faculty research supervisor must confirm supervision in writing before the application is submitted. Instruction is delivered in French, so written and spoken mastery of French is essential, and candidates must also demonstrate a good understanding of written English; depending on the fieldwork location, proficiency in a third language may eventually be required. The programme admits students in the fall and winter sessions.
