Program details

Overview

Chemistry (CHEM) is a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) major at the University of Guelph covering the structure and behaviour of molecules. Coursework spans organic and inorganic synthesis, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, and theoretical chemistry, alongside the environmental and health implications of chemical science, taught using dedicated laboratory facilities. The standard track is four years; a co-operative education option extends the program to four and a half years and includes four paid work terms. Students may enter the major in semester one or in any semester thereafter. The program sits within Guelph's Bachelor of Science offerings alongside related majors including Biochemistry, Biological and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Physical Science, Physics, and Biomedical Toxicology. Graduates are prepared for further study or for careers in analytical, industrial, environmental, and research chemistry roles that draw on laboratory and instrumental technique alongside chemical theory.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission to the Chemistry (CHEM) Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) follows the University of Guelph's general Ontario Secondary School admission process: an applicant's admission average is calculated from the top six completed 4U/M (or equivalent) courses, including any courses required for the program. Guelph does not publish fixed minimum cut-offs; year-to-year cut-offs are set by the quality and quantity of applications received and the space available in the program, and the university's own estimated ranges do not guarantee an offer of admission. All offers remain conditional on completing the OSSD (or equivalent), the required six courses, and achieving the minimum final average stated in the offer.
