Program details

Overview

The Juris Doctor is a three-year professional law degree delivered by the Faculty of Law on the Fort Garry campus, requiring completion of 92 credit hours. It is an advanced-entry program: applicants must have completed previous university-level study, with the specific requirements set by the Faculty of Law. The curriculum covers foundation subjects such as contracts, criminal law, constitutional law, and evidence, alongside upper-year perspective courses that let students study particular areas of law, including fields such as human rights and international trade law, in greater depth. Legal research and scholarly writing are built into the program throughout. Experiential components include moot court and mock trial exercises, clinical placements in which students work with real clients under supervision, and opportunities to shadow judges. An advocacy program develops students' courtroom skills progressively across the three years, with opportunities to compete in national and international competitions. As the only law school in Manitoba, the program draws on close ties with local practitioners who teach and mentor students. It suits students preparing for careers in private practice, government, business, or other law-related fields.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The Juris Doctor is an advanced-entry programme: applicants must complete a minimum of 60 credit hours (30 for mature applicants aged 26 or over) of university-level study, including a course meeting the university's mathematics requirement, before admission. All applicants must write the LSAT, taken no earlier than June 2021 and, for the Index Score category, no later than January 2026 (November 2025 for the Individual Consideration and Canadian Indigenous categories); a score is valid for five years. The Index Score category, which fills most of the class, is decided solely on the Adjusted Grade Point Average and LSAT score weighted equally; the Canadian Indigenous and Individual Consideration categories instead require a personal statement of no more than 1,500 words and three letters of recommendation. Non-native English speakers must submit IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with no band below 7.0, TOEFL iBT 100 overall with no section below 24, or CAEL 80 overall with no subtest below 80. Applications and fees are due December 1, transcripts by December 15, for Fall entry.
