The Master of Interdisciplinary Studies (MIDST) is a graduate degree at the University of New Brunswick that lets students design a research program combining methods and knowledge from more than one academic discipline, tailored to their own research topic rather than a single department's curriculum. Admission requires a four-year undergraduate degree, preferably with honours, and applicants must secure a faculty supervisor before applying. The program runs two years on a thesis basis: students submit a five-page thesis proposal with a working bibliography, a background statement explaining how they will draw on different disciplines, a sample of academic writing, and three academic references alongside their transcripts and a completed IDST application questionnaire. Students begin in the Fall term. Entrance scholarships and graduate research assistantships are available on a competitive basis. The credential suits students whose research interests span more than one field and cannot be accommodated within a single discipline's existing graduate program at UNB.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must secure a research supervisor before applying, with a letter from the supervisor uploaded prior to application review. Master's applicants require a four-year undergraduate program (preferably honours or equivalent) with at least an A- average. International applicants whose first language is not English must, if applicable, submit English test scores: TOEFL 100, TWE 5.5, or IELTS 7 (must indicate 'academic', not 'general'). Required application materials include a background statement on the disciplines the applicant will draw on, a five-page thesis/dissertation research proposal with a working bibliography, a supervisor's letter of willingness to supervise, three academic references, a sample of sustained academic writing (15-20 pages), official transcripts, a completed IDST application questionnaire, and the general application form.
