Program details

Overview

This certificate covers First Nations culture alongside internal and external issues affecting First Nations communities, together with foundational principles spanning government, politics and public administration, including some specialisation in self-government, administration, and the law as it applies to First Nations. It is intended to support people involved in administering First Nations governments and to extend university-level study to those unable to commit to a full four-year programme.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 65.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Admission into this Certificate program follows the same requirements as admission to any UNBC undergraduate program: applicants are assessed under the standard secondary-school, transfer or post-secondary entry categories, which for direct secondary-school entry means an overall 65% average across five approved Grade 12 courses. To remain eligible for the Certificate itself, students must maintain a minimum GPA of C, calculated on all UNBC coursework applied toward the Certificate; up to 15 credit hours of transfer credit from another recognized institution may be applied. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet UNBC's institution-wide English proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no module below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 90 with at least 20 per section, Duolingo English Test 125 with no sub-score below 115, CAEL 70 with no subtest below 60, or PTE Academic 65 with no section below 60. Students are advised to consult the Chair of the First Nations Studies Program, and where appropriate the Director of their regional campus, before beginning Certificate coursework, since course scheduling varies by term.

Application Details

Application Deadline: UNBC's general-entry Bachelor's programs (BA, BComm, BPl, BSc) accept domestic (Canadian/PR) applications continuously with no fixed closing date for either the September or January semester. International applicants face undated, recurring cutoffs that UNBC prints without a specific year: 11 July for September-semester entry and 8 November for January-semester entry; applying later risks missing the documentation needed to study in Canada before the semester begins. Competitive-entry programs (Engineering, Nursing, Health Sciences, Education, Social Work) and individual graduate programs set their own dates each cycle -- see the programme-specific entries below for this institution's graduate programs. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
