Overview
The Early Childhood Education Certificate is especially designed for those already in the workforce, with core course offerings scheduled during afternoons and evenings. Spread over four semesters, the program equips you with skills in childhood education, communications, and interpersonal relations and includes two practicals that provide a context to apply classroom learning.
After you complete the program, a first aid certificate, and 500 hours of supervised work, you can apply to the Provincial Licensing Board to receive your Early Childhood Educator license.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Competitive entry judged on suitability as much as grades. ACADEMIC - one of two routes: B.C. secondary school graduation or an accepted equivalent (the IB diploma, the B.C. Adult Graduation Diploma / Adult Dogwood and the GED all count), or at least nine university-level credits with a cumulative GPA of 2.33 or better. You must also meet the prerequisites for CMNS 125. PROGRAM PREPARATION: everyone who meets the minimums must show suitability for work with young children and genuine interest in the field by completing UFV's ECE admission questionnaire (available at ufv.ca/registrar/forms) and submitting a short resume of work or volunteer experience with children, certifications, languages and skills. Experience with children aged five and under is valued especially highly, particularly in a leadership or supervisory role, and courses in First Nations studies, Indigenous knowledges, social justice, inclusive education or equity are worth naming. SELECTION: the questionnaire and resume are scored for evidence that you understand child development, value inclusion and play, and can reflect; that score combined with the academic record decides admission, and a waitlist is built for each intake. Ten per cent of seats are guaranteed to applicants who self-identify as Indigenous and meet the minimums. TIMING: Fall entry only, with complete applications due 31 January; early decisions are issued by 15 December for files complete before 1 December, and if you do not register by 1 July your place goes to the waitlist. PRACTICUM: a criminal record check under the Criminal Records Review Act is required before any practicum placement or field observation, and admission does not by itself guarantee a practicum placement.

Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply directly to UFV: applications for Fall (September) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026, for Winter (January) 2027 entry opened 1 May 2026, and for Summer (May) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026; UFV publishes no closing date for any of these and instead admits many programmes strictly in application-date order once every required document has arrived, so applying soon after opening matters more than any deadline. Grade 12 students may apply from 1 October of their graduating year and must send final transcripts by 3 August. International applicants use UFV International's own windows - 1 October to 31 May for Fall, 1 May to 31 October for Winter and 1 October to 1 March for Summer - and are likewise assessed on a rolling, first-arrived basis until each programme fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
