Program details

Overview

This certificate prepares students for work as education assistants within schools, or as support workers in the community. Study builds the knowledge and skills needed to support students with a range of learning needs, working under a classroom teacher's direction, as well as to help both adults and children who have diverse needs in vocational, residential, and recreational settings, and in long-term care facilities.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: ACADEMIC - one of: B.C. secondary school graduation or an equivalent with an overall C average, or at least nine university-level credits with a GPA of 2.00 or better. You must also meet the prerequisites for CMNS 125 or ENGL 105. SUITABILITY: you have to show a demonstrated ability to work with children of varied ages and abilities - volunteer or paid work in classrooms or with children in the community is the usual evidence - and you present it on UFV's Additional Application Information Form, which asks for your related education, work and volunteer history, a resume, and a personal statement of at least 250 words. TIMING: Fall entry only, on UFV's specific-intake route, with applications opening 1 October. Applicants who do not meet the requirements are pointed to Qualifying Studies. PRACTICUM: admission does not guarantee a practicum placement, and the programme's practicum regulations apply.

Application Details

Start Date: September
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply directly to UFV: applications for Fall (September) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026, for Winter (January) 2027 entry opened 1 May 2026, and for Summer (May) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026; UFV publishes no closing date for any of these and instead admits many programmes strictly in application-date order once every required document has arrived, so applying soon after opening matters more than any deadline. Grade 12 students may apply from 1 October of their graduating year and must send final transcripts by 3 August. International applicants use UFV International's own windows - 1 October to 31 May for Fall, 1 May to 31 October for Winter and 1 October to 1 March for Summer - and are likewise assessed on a rolling, first-arrived basis until each programme fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
