Overview
When you graduate from the Teaching English as a Second Language certificate, you have the skills to teach English to non-native speakers and are eligible to apply for TESL Canada Professional Standard Two certification. You'll learn the latest techniques from experienced faculty and get valuable teaching practice both in class and during a supervised practicum. All UFV TESL courses are offered online, so you can take classes even if you are working or finishing your degree. You can complete the Teaching English as a Second Language courses in two semesters. Admission Requirements: Admission requires completion of a bachelor's degree (or near-completion, while finishing one) with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.67. All applicants must meet UFV's Degree/diploma-level English language proficiency requirement (e.g. IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 88 with no section below 20). Separately, TESL Canada certification itself requires applicants whose bachelor's degree was not completed in English to demonstrate one of: IELTS Academic 7.0, TOEFL iBT 101, English Studies 12, or English First Nations 12 completed with 70% or higher at a Canadian school. No specific prerequisite courses are listed for admission to the certificate. Applications are accepted for Fall-semester entrance only; continuing students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.00 to remain in good standing.

Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply directly to UFV: applications for Fall (September) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026, for Winter (January) 2027 entry opened 1 May 2026, and for Summer (May) 2027 entry open 1 October 2026; UFV publishes no closing date for any of these and instead admits many programmes strictly in application-date order once every required document has arrived, so applying soon after opening matters more than any deadline. Grade 12 students may apply from 1 October of their graduating year and must send final transcripts by 3 August. International applicants use UFV International's own windows - 1 October to 31 May for Fall, 1 May to 31 October for Winter and 1 October to 1 March for Summer - and are likewise assessed on a rolling, first-arrived basis until each programme fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
