The Master of Engineering is a professional, course-based master's degree offered through the University of Toronto's Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, taught by industry professionals rather than built around a thesis. Students typically complete nine or ten courses, with up to six in technical areas and up to four in professional development topics such as leadership, finance, entrepreneurship, and innovation. It is offered through seven departments and institutes: the Institute for Aerospace Studies, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry, Civil & Mineral Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, and Mechanical & Industrial Engineering. Completion timelines include one year full-time on an intensive schedule, two years on an extended full-time schedule, or three years part-time. Students may pursue faculty-supervised projects and optional co-op or practicum placements, and can select up to two emphases from more than 30 available options, including areas such as data analytics and machine learning, robotics, and entrepreneurship. The program suits recent engineering graduates and working professionals seeking targeted technical knowledge alongside business and leadership skills to advance their careers.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Master of Engineering (MEng) is administered at the departmental level within the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, and the program's own how-to-apply page states that minimum GPA requirements vary between departments; applicants should confirm the specific threshold with the department they are applying to. Institution-wide, the School of Graduate Studies' minimum for a master's program is an appropriate bachelor's degree with a final-year average of at least mid-B, and English proficiency must meet SGS minimums: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in each component, or TOEFL iBT 93 overall with at least 22 in Writing and Speaking. Meeting these minimums does not guarantee admission, since MEng places are competitive and department-specific criteria may exceed the SGS floor.
