The Biomedical Engineering program teaches students to develop technologies that enhance health care and medicine, combining engineering principles with human biology to address problems in medicine and biology. Core topics include biomechanics, medical imaging, biomedical instrumentation, 3D tissue engineering, medical implants, and human-machine interaction. Students begin design projects in first year and work in laboratories equipped with biomedical sensors, materials, and imaging tools, with opportunities to join student design teams and research labs, including UVic's Victoria Hand Project, which develops 3D-printed prosthetic hands. The program includes UVic's co-operative education option, in which students complete paid, career-related work terms that count toward the degree; on average 70 percent of UVic co-op students graduate with a job offer already in hand. Graduates pursue roles such as medical imaging engineer, product development engineer, rehabilitation engineer, tissue engineer, and biomechanics engineer. The program leads to a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree completed over four years of full-time study, offered by the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Victoria.
