Overview
The Power Engineering/Process Operator (4th Class) Certificate Program prepares graduates for employment as power engineers, able to operate, maintain, and manage industrial power and processing plants. This full-time program includes theory and extensive training in an industry workplace practicum. Upon successful completions, graduates will have the knowledge and hands-on experience to challenge the Technical Safety BC standardized examinations for an Interprovincial Fourth Class Power Engineer's Certificate of Competency. The program also prepares graduates with technical knowledge required for a process operator.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires Grade 12 or equivalent, or mature-student status, with Foundations of Mathematics 11 or Pre-Calculus 11 at a "C+", Physics 11, and English 12 among the required courses. Applicants must pass VIU's assessment testing, submit a personal profile, and may be interviewed to confirm suitability; a medical certificate can be required before the work practicum placement. Mechanical and electrical aptitude, good vision, manual dexterity, and decision-making skills are noted as desirable. Enrolment is limited and preference goes to applicants with post-secondary experience, related industrial experience, or stronger assessment results; meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. No English-language test score or minimum GPA is published.
