Overview
Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences (IMS) at Western University is an undergraduate module within the Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMSc) degree at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, letting students study two or more basic medical science fields at an advanced level, drawn from anatomy and cell biology, biochemistry, epidemiology and biostatistics, medical biophysics, microbiology and immunology, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology. Three module tracks are available: Honours Specialization, Specialization, and Major, with the Honours Specialization the most heavily enrolled, drawing roughly 180 students and including mandatory laboratory courses in third and fourth year for hands-on skill development. Students enter IMS modules in year three after completing required first- and second-year prerequisite courses, and about forty percent of BMSc students choose an IMS module, with roughly two hundred students in each of years three and four. Teaching is based in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry on Western's main campus in London, Ontario. The interdisciplinary, lab-heavy structure suits students who want to combine more than one basic medical science rather than specialize in a single field, and who want practical laboratory training built into their upper years ahead of further health-related study.

Admission Requirements: Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences (IMS) is not entered directly from high school: students first complete Medical Sciences First Entry / Medical Sciences 1-2 in the Faculty of Science, then apply to this Honours Specialization module for year three of the BMSc. Ontario high-school applicants to Medical Sciences need the Ontario Secondary School Diploma including English (ENG4U), Biology (SBI4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) and Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), with Physics (SPH4U) recommended. Admission to the BMSc requires a minimum average of 75% on the year-two 2000-level courses that form the admission requirement for this module (assured admission for Medical Sciences 2 students needs 80%, with no course below 60%); Schulich's own published averages show recent cut-offs of 82.17% for 2025/26 and 81.0% for 2026/27 for this module (FULL+ in 2026/27), showing how competitive the pool has run. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet Western's institution-wide proof-of-English-proficiency policy, e.g. IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0.

Application Deadline:Western applies through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre, which opens for Fall 2027 entry in late September 2026; Western's own equal-consideration deadline for full-time undergraduate study is 15 January 2027, the same date used for domestic (OUAC 101/105) and international applicants alike, since Western publishes no separate international closing date. Several named programmes carry their own earlier deadlines within the cycle: Medicine (MD) closes 1 October 2026, Law (JD) and Dentistry (DDS) close 1 November 2026, Education (BEd) closes 2 November 2026, and Western Integrated Science closes in early April 2027. Students already enrolled in an Ontario high school cannot be required to respond to an offer before 1 June 2027. Admission is not rolling: applicants are assessed against these published deadlines. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
