Overview

The PhD in Computer Science at Western University is a four-year, thesis-based, full-time graduate program offered by the Department of Computer Science, intended to produce researchers and professional leaders in the field. Students normally enter with an MSc in Computer Science, completing the degree over 12 terms; applicants without a Computer Science honours background may qualify with a four-year honours degree of very high standing plus prerequisite coursework in operating systems, foundations of computer science, algorithm analysis, and programming design or languages, supplemented by additional third- and fourth-year computer science courses. Admission requires an MSc in Computer Science from a recognized university or college with at least a 70% overall average as determined by the department. Domestic applicants may apply for Fall or Winter entry; international applicants face earlier deadlines for the same intakes. Graduates are prepared for research careers in academia, industry, and government.
