Overview
The Master of Finance (MFin) at Wilfrid Laurier University is a graduate program requiring a set of core courses covering investment management, financial statement analysis, derivatives, corporate finance, fixed income analysis, financial econometrics, economics for financial analysis, and financial modelling, with training in tools such as Bloomberg terminals, Excel, VBA, and Python. Electives extend into advanced security analysis, international financial management, and machine learning applications in finance. The program is offered in several formats: a standard full-time track; a full-time track that adds a co-op component with paid work placements concentrated in the Greater Toronto Area; a full-time Methods Field track aimed at research preparation; and a double-degree option combined with the university's Management Analytics program. Students gain hands-on experience through a student-run investment fund, and the curriculum is built to prepare students for the CFA examination process. The standard and co-op tracks target graduates of economics, business, or related finance programs, the co-op stream in particular suiting those earlier in their careers, while the Methods Field track suits candidates aiming toward doctoral-level research.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Wilfrid Laurier's Master of Finance asks for an undergraduate degree in economics, business, or a related field with a concentration in finance, and a minimum B+ average over the last two years of full-time study. A four-year Canadian degree makes the GMAT or GRE recommended rather than mandatory, while a three-year Canadian degree makes it mandatory; a passed CFA Level I waives the test. Competitive percentile guidance is 68% or higher for the co-op stream and 55% or higher for the regular stream. Applicants whose undergraduate instruction was not in English need a TOEFL score of at least 100 overall (minimum 21 in each of the four skills) or an IELTS score of at least 7. The application also requires a statement of intent, a resume, academic or professional references, and applicants may be invited to a recorded or live interview. The program starts each Fall (September), with an early deadline of December 1, an international deadline of March 30, and a domestic deadline of July 15.
