York University's PhD in Social Anthropology focuses on the social and cultural anthropology of contemporary societies, combining conceptual sophistication, reflexivity and political engagement in both theoretical and practical research. Core courses cover established and emerging methodologies, foundational and current theories, and historic and contemporary debates in anthropology, while elective courses examine change and complexity in social and cultural life. Students choose from four research streams: Health, Illness & the Body; Knowledge Systems; Power, Politics & Development; and Representation, Identity & Performance. The program is full-time, with Fall entry only. The four research streams let students align their doctoral research with a specific area of anthropological inquiry within the broader social and cultural anthropology focus. Admission requires a minimum B+ overall average, along with two letters of recommendation, a resume or CV, a written work sample and a statement of interest.
