The PhD program in Social Work at York University focuses on the critical examination of social control and oppression, and on the ways social structures contribute to the marginalization of oppressed and disenfranchised populations. Admission requires applicants to hold a Master's degree in social work or a related discipline with a minimum B+ average, and to have already completed at least one social work degree, either a BSW or an MSW. Students are admitted for Fall entry and may study full-time or part-time. Degree completion requires a comprehensive examination and a dissertation. For applicants whose first language is not English, the program requires an accepted English-language proficiency test score, including TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, Duolingo English Test, or PTE Academic.
