The Master of Arts in Development Studies at York University provides students with the conceptual and methodological tools needed to understand current issues and challenges in sustainable human development. The five-term, full-time program combines critical theoretical study with practical experience, including a required field work component and opportunities for international internships and volunteer placements. Students choose between completing an MA thesis or a major research paper (MRP) plus one additional elective course, allowing the program to suit both those pursuing further graduate study and those currently working, or seeking to work, in the development field. Admission is for the fall term. Applicants whose first language is not English must submit an English proficiency score: TOEFL iBT 100 (or 5 on the new scale from January 2026), IELTS Academic 7.5, Duolingo English Test 140, or PTE Academic 76.
