Overview

This program leads to a Master of Arts (MA) in Interdisciplinary Studies, completed over two years full-time or three years part-time. Students design an individual program of study that bridges three disciplinary categories, choosing scholarly lenses from across the humanities, social sciences and sciences to pursue an original research project. The degree culminates in a scholarly thesis of approximately 120 pages and an oral defence; some students extend the thesis with a creative component such as a novel, film, art exhibition or app. Before applying, prospective students must meet with the program director to discuss their proposed area of inquiry. The program suits students whose research interests cross conventional disciplinary boundaries and who want the flexibility to build a customized course of graduate study.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants require a minimum B+ average, three letters of recommendation, a 1,000-word statement of research identifying three fields of interest and works consulted, a resume or CV, and a sample of written work; applicants must also meet with the Program Director before applying. Unless exempt, applicants must meet York's graduate English proficiency minimums: IELTS Academic 7.5, TOEFL iBT 5 (MyBest scale, for tests taken January 2026 or later), Duolingo English Test 140, or PTE Academic 76.
