This program leads to a one-year Master of Arts (MA) in Linguistics & Applied Linguistics, completed through course work only, a major research paper, or a thesis; a PhD is also offered for students pursuing further research through qualifying examinations, a dissertation proposal and a dissertation. The program focuses on the broad study of language and society, language variation and change, and second-language pedagogy, with PhD-level research extending into core linguistics, sociolinguistics and applied linguistics. Applicants to the Applied Linguistics stream typically have teaching experience and provide a letter of employment and a summary of that experience alongside the standard application. The program suits students who want a focused, research-oriented graduate qualification in linguistics or language pedagogy, whether preparing for further doctoral study, teaching or applied language-related careers.
