Biomedical Engineering is a three-year BSc programme of 180 ECTS credits in the Department of Engineering, taught in Icelandic. It prepares students for work on devices and methods used to analyse and treat disease, applying engineering techniques to biology and medicine.
Topics include brainwave recordings, prosthetics, CT imaging, radiation therapy and mathematical models, and the course of study combines mathematics and physics with biophysics. The early semesters are given to foundation courses common to every engineering programme, including mathematics, physics, programming and project management. In the sixth semester all engineering students complete a group project that takes an idea through to a finished product.
The BSc is the first part of a five-year route totalling 300 ECTS credits, followed by a two-year MSc. Holders of both degrees receive the licensed professional title of engineer, and sustainability is a recurring theme in the teaching.
