Byggingafræði (building science) is a three-and-a-half-year Bachelor of Science programme in the Department of Engineering Technology at Reykjavik University. It carries 210 ECTS credits and leads to the protected professional title byggingafræðingur.
Building scientists design new buildings and renovate older ones. Their work also covers contracts with builders, cost estimates, as-built drawings, and the design of fire protection and sound insulation. Study topics include architecture, building technology, the properties of common building materials, the basics of structural design, plumbing design, construction management, computer-aided design, law, management and operations, measurement, and repair and renovation work.
On completion, graduates are expected to take on varied roles in the construction industry, particularly as professionals who mediate between building designers, public authorities and the companies carrying out construction. Exchange study is possible, but the programme is not offered as distance learning.
