Program details

Overview

American Sign Language is the main language of most Deaf Americans, conveyed visually through hand movement and space with a grammar of its own. At Montgomery College, students may enroll in ASL courses to meet a general education requirement or simply to learn about Deaf culture and communication. The associate of arts prepares people for jobs that bring them into regular contact with Deaf individuals. After completing it, students can transfer to a bachelor's program and major in ASL, deaf education, interpreter training or social work. A certificate is another option. As courses advance from beginner to upper levels, learners gain skill in understanding and producing signs, using facial expression to shape meaning, and appreciating the customs of the Deaf community.
