It traces its roots to 1925, when the Rev. H.L.
Turner founded the Winnipeg Bible Training School to train Christian workers for church, Sunday school, and mission service. The school became the Winnipeg Bible Institute and College of Theology in 1948, after receiving a provincial charter to grant theological degrees, and then Winnipeg Bible College in 1964 on reaching full degree-granting status.
The Theological Seminary was added in 1972, and the institution relocated to its present Otterburne campus - the former St.
Joseph's College, a Catholic high school - in 1970. It took its current name in 2011 under provincial legislation (Bill 301).
Providence is chartered by the Province of Manitoba to grant Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees. It operates two academic divisions: University College, whose undergraduate majors span business, aviation, the sciences, education, psychology, and the humanities - taught through the Buller School of Business and a downtown Winnipeg campus that also hosts the graduate Master of Management - and the Theological Seminary, which trains students for pastoral and counselling ministry through programs including the Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry.
The University of Manitoba recognizes Providence degrees for entry into graduate studies, and the province credits them toward teacher certification. Providence is accredited by the Association for Biblical Higher Education; its Seminary is separately accredited by the Association of Theological Schools.
