BCIT's Advanced Certificate in Cardiac Sciences, Cardiac Rhythm Device (CRD) option, is a part-time, distance-education program for allied health professionals who already hold ECG interpretation skills. Delivered fully online through BCIT's Flexible Learning model, it trains students to read and manage abnormal heart rhythms using implanted devices such as pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronization therapy devices. The program comprises four theory courses (14.0 credits) covering pacemaker concepts, electrophysiology, device implant, and device follow-up, followed by a supervised clinical practicum (25.0 credits) of at least 625 hours at an approved cardiac device assessment lab, for a total of 39.0 credits. Applicants need a BSc or two-year allied health diploma, at least two years of recent clinical experience in cardiology or cardiovascular technology, completion of prerequisite theory courses, and a confirmed clinical site sponsor. Students may register in individual theory courses for professional development without formal program admission. The program is not open to international students. Graduates strengthen their expertise in cardiac rhythm device follow-up and intraoperative lead testing.
