Program details

Overview

This advanced diploma covers seafaring at both rating and officer levels, spanning navigation, engineering and electrotechnical disciplines. Across these areas, it builds safety, practical, technical and management skills needed for positions of responsibility aboard ocean-going vessels.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission requires a BCIT Diploma in Marine Engineering, or an equivalent minimum of 60 credits of post-secondary Marine Engineering education from a recognized institution, plus the STCW Fourth-Class Motor Marine Engineering Certificate of Competency; applicants without a BCIT or Transport Canada-approved Marine Engineering diploma must instead hold a Second-Class Marine Engineering CoC approved by Transport Canada. Applicants who lack the post-secondary requirement but hold the Fourth-Class CoC and relevant work experience may be considered case-by-case. The English-language standard is BCIT's Category 3, met by English Studies 12 at 50% or equivalent, IELTS Academic 6.0 overall (no band under 5.0), TOEFL iBT 4.0 overall (no section under 3), PTE Academic 52, Duolingo 105, or CAEL 60. A minimum passing grade of 60% is required in each course, and the diploma is not open to international students. It runs a single January intake each year.

Application Details

Start Date: January
Application Deadline: BCIT publishes common credential application dates for most cohort-based diplomas, degrees and Flexible Learning routes, though each program's own page governs: for the January 2027 intake domestic applications run 1 February 2026 to 2 January 2027 and international to 1 November 2026; for the April 2027 intake domestic runs 1 May 2026 to 1 April 2027 and international to 1 February 2027; for September 2027 domestic applications open 1 October 2026 and close 1 September 2027, international 2 July 2027. Openings are 9:00 am and deadlines 11:59 pm Pacific Time, moving to the next business day on a weekend. Admission is not institute-wide rolling, but many programs work first-qualified-first-accepted and can fill before the posted deadline, and several programs, mostly in Health Sciences, trades and graduate studies, run entirely separate application tables of their own. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
