Overview
Globalization, Culture, and Power is a specialization within Carleton University's Bachelor of Global and International Studies (BGInS) program, delivered through the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The specialization draws on Anthropology to examine the concepts of culture and the global within the context of globalization processes, giving students conceptual and methodological tools for analyzing how power operates across cultural and global systems. As part of the BGInS structure, students complete a second-language requirement and an international experience requirement, and may choose a co-op option combining academic study with work terms. The program combines anthropological theory and method with the broader international-studies curriculum covering global institutions, development, and international relations. Graduates are prepared for work in international organizations, government, non-governmental organizations, and other fields requiring cross-cultural analysis and understanding of global power dynamics.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission is to the B.G.In.S. (Honours) first year: the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including a minimum of six 4U or M courses, which must include a 4U course in English (or anglais). Direct entry to this specialization is not available; students are admitted to the BGInS program and select the Globalization, Culture, and Power specialization during the degree. An overall average of at least 70% is normally required to be considered for admission; higher averages are required for admission to programs for which the demand for places by qualified applicants exceeds the number of places available.
