Overview
The Doctor of Philosophy in Ethics and Public Affairs (EPAF) at Carleton University combines ethical analysis with social science, giving students a comprehensive understanding of approaches to solving specific public issues. The program is taught collaboratively by philosophers who research public issues alongside social science and public policy specialists. Research topics include gender and other social inequalities, multiculturalism, the environment, health, international development, global inequality, human rights, and good governance. Candidates complete coursework alongside independent research culminating in a doctoral dissertation. The nominal full-time length of the program is four years, with an annual intake in the Fall term. Graduates are prepared to compete for academic positions as well as policy-related roles in government, civil society organizations, and consulting. The program draws on Carleton's Department of Philosophy together with the School of Public Policy and Administration, giving candidates a grounding in both normative theory and applied policy analysis.
