History is offered as a Bachelor of Arts (BA) through Carleton University's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The program covers the study of past events, ideas, and movements and their influence on the present, using a range of historical approaches and source material. Students may pursue a Public History concentration, which includes applied skills training alongside traditional coursework. Ottawa's archives, libraries, and museums are used as research and training resources for students in the program. The curriculum combines survey and specialized courses across historical periods and regions, developing research, writing, and critical-analysis skills. Graduates are prepared for further study in history or related fields, as well as careers in archives, museums, education, public policy, and other areas that draw on historical research and writing skills.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:70.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Direct entry to first year requires the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, including a minimum of six 4U or M courses, one of which must be a 4U course in English (an approved English-language test may satisfy this prerequisite instead). An overall average of at least 70% is normally required to be considered for admission, though actual cut-off averages are set annually and are typically higher given the demand for places.
