The Master of Arts in Music and Culture examines theories of culture, of music, and of music as culture, drawing on interdisciplinary approaches including sociology, critical theory, feminism, post-colonialism, cultural studies and ethnomusicology. Research areas available to students include Canadian and First Nations music, popular music, historical musicology, ethnomusicology, music and media, jazz studies, and music and social justice. Students choose among coursework, research-essay, or thesis pathways, with practicum placements available as an experiential learning option. The program is delivered in person and normally takes two years of full-time study to complete, structured as six terms for the thesis pathway or eight courses for non-thesis pathways. Admission is offered for the Fall term only. Graduates are prepared for further graduate study or careers in music research, cultural industries, and related fields.
