Diploma in Social Work

This technical Diplôme d'études collégiales (DEC) in Social Work at Cégep de Jonquière runs over six sessions and prepares students to support individuals, families, and communities in addressing social difficulties by mobilizing personal and community resources. Coursework covers professional communication, the ethics and identity of social intervention, sociological analysis of inequality and power, psychosocial and socio-legal intervention techniques, crisis intervention, community-project development, and human development and psychology. Three mandatory internships build practical skills progressively: an early community-based placement, a later placement combining observation with direct intervention, and a longer final placement of at least twelve weeks focused on hands-on intervention. Students may also apply for an optional international cooperation placement, typically in Africa, lasting about ten weeks. General-education courses in philosophy, literature, English, and physical education complement the technical curriculum. The program suits students who value equity and social justice, work well in teams, and want to help others navigate social problems. Graduates work as social-intervention technicians, community workers, employment counsellors, or correctional agents in settings such as CLSCs, youth centres, and community organizations.
