Medical Ultrasound Technology (Technologie de l'echographie medicale, 142.G0) is a three-year technical diploma that trains students to perform ultrasound examinations under medical prescription, using ultrasound equipment to examine parts of the body and gather the observations and images specialist physicians use to reach a diagnosis or treatment plan. Students also assist with ultrasound-guided medical procedures. Training covers abdominal, pelvic and surface, obstetrical and gynecological, vascular, musculoskeletal, cardiac, and breast ultrasound, applied to adult and pediatric patients. Students may go on to teach other ultrasound technologists or health professionals, or take part in ultrasound research. Practical training uses ten hospital-grade ultrasound machines, five ultrasound simulators, and a peripheral vascular Doppler system, beginning with a two-day observation placement in the first semester and continuing with clinical placements in the final two semesters. The program leads to a Diploma of College Studies (DEC) and prepares graduates to work as medical imaging technologists specializing in ultrasound in hospitals, CLSCs, or private clinics; graduates must become members of the Ordre des technologues en imagerie medicale, en radio-oncologie et en electrophysiologie medicale du Quebec (OTIMROEPMQ).
