Overview
Biomedical Laboratory Technology (Technologie d'analyses biomedicales, 140.C0) is a three-year technical diploma that trains medical laboratory technologists and technicians to perform laboratory analyses that support medical diagnosis and treatment monitoring, and to contribute to disease prevention and public health. Students learn the laboratory workflow used in biochemistry, hematology, hemostasis, immunohematology, microbiology, and histopathology laboratories, as well as specimen-collection centres, working with clinical specimens at individual laboratory workstations. Training includes a clinical blood-draw placement in the second year and a 23-week hospital placement in the third year. The program is accredited by Accreditation Canada, one of only three programs of this kind in Quebec to hold this accreditation, which qualifies graduates to sit the national certification exam. The program leads to a Diploma of College Studies (DEC) and qualifies graduates to use the reserved title of medical technologist, granted by the Ordre professionnel des technologistes medicaux du Quebec (OPTMQ), or to work as medical laboratory technicians in hospital laboratories, pharmaceutical or biotechnology research, environmental or food-industry laboratories, Hema-Quebec, or public health institutes. DEC-BAC university transfer pathways are also available.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants need a Secondary School Diploma (DES) with Chemistry at the Secondary 5 level; Mathematics, either the Culture, Society and Technology sequence at Secondary 5, or the Technical-Science or Natural-Science sequence at Secondary 4; and Physics at the Secondary 5 level. From the first year, students must register as a student member of the Ordre professionnel des technologistes medicaux du Quebec (OPTMQ), which carries its own membership fees, and must keep vaccination records current to access clinical placements, which are unpaid and may take place outside the Rimouski region.
