It was founded in 1967 as one of the twelve original cégeps created under the province-wide reform that followed the Parent Report, bringing together several long-established local schools, including the Séminaire de Rimouski, the Couvent des Ursulines, and a regional technical institute, and inheriting nearly 150 years of educational tradition in the area. Today the college enrolls close to 2,900 students in pre-university and technical programs leading to the Diploma of College Studies (DEC), alongside continuing-education Attestation of College Studies (AEC) offerings.
Pre-university streams prepare students for university studies in the natural sciences, humanities, and arts, while technical programs train graduates directly for careers in fields such as nursing, forestry, civil engineering, computer science, social work, and policing. Campus facilities include the Gilles Vigneault Library, student residences, and athletics under the Sports Rimouski banner.
