Overview
Soins préhospitaliers d'urgence is a technical DEC that trains primary-care paramedics for practice in Quebec. To bring training as close as possible to professional reality, students use a range of laboratories that simulate interventions across multiple contexts, with equipment and tools similar to what primary-care paramedics use on the job, along with ambulance vehicles for driving practice and learning activities in specialized settings. Students must obtain equipment specific to the training, such as uniforms and protective equipment for clinical placements (stages). Some course activities and placements can take place during the day, evening, night, or on weekends, and students should expect travel, lodging, and living costs when placements, workplace activities, or off-campus learning activities occur away from the college. An international placement is also possible. The program suits students aiming for a paramedic career who are prepared for a demanding, hands-on training schedule that extends beyond regular daytime hours and can include placements away from the Saint-Hyacinthe region or abroad.

Admission Requirements: The program states no specific course prerequisite beyond the Diplôme d'études secondaires (DES). Because applications far outnumber the limited places, a first selection is made on the strength of the academic record; up to 150 shortlisted candidates are then called to a paramedical-aptitude test (Kin-AP). Candidates who are accepted must provide proof of the absence of a criminal record (a certificat d'absence d'empêchement for minors, or a certificat de bonne conduite/plumitif for those 18 and over) before they can access clinical placements, must meet certain basic immunization requirements before placements, and must hold a valid class 5 driver's licence and meet SAAQ conditions to obtain the class 4A licence the program requires. As with all Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe programs, applicants apply through SRAM and must meet the college's French-proficiency conditions: a French-mastery or placement test where applicable, and the upgrading course 601-013-HY for weaker Secondary 5 French results, per the Cégep's admission-requirements page; every admitted student also sits the college's English placement test.
