Overview
College of the North Atlantic's Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Mechanic program is a 37-week certificate delivered on campus at the Ridge Road campus, working toward Red Seal certification in the refrigeration and air conditioning trade. Students learn to install, service, and repair refrigeration and air conditioning systems used in residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial settings. Coursework covers system components, refrigerant handling, blueprint interpretation, electrical and control circuits, and performance testing, combining classroom theory with hands-on shop practice on industry equipment. The program provides the technical training block of the refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic apprenticeship, preparing students to register as apprentices and progress toward journeyperson certification. Because practical training requires respirator use, students with facial hair must be clean-shaven for fit testing and whenever a respirator is worn. Graduates find work with mechanical contractors, building maintenance departments, and HVAC service companies across Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond.

Admission Requirements: Direct entry requires one of: High School Graduation, Adult Basic Education (Level III) Graduation with the required college profile, a Trades Bridging Certificate, a College Transition Certificate, or Mature Student status (age 19+, out of school at least one year). International applicants must meet CNA's institution-wide English Language Proficiency Requirement (Admission Procedures AC-102-PR): IELTS Academic overall band 6.0, TOEFL iBT 79, PTE Academic 53, or Duolingo English Test 105 (component minimum 110). Because practical training involves respirator use, students with facial hair are required to be clean-shaven at the time of fit testing and whenever a respirator is worn.
