College of the North Atlantic's Steamfitter/Pipefitter program is a 35-week certificate delivered on campus at the Clarenville campus, working toward Red Seal certification in the steamfitter-pipefitter trade. Students learn to lay out, assemble, fabricate, install, maintain, and repair piping systems used to carry steam, water, and other fluids in low- and high-pressure heating, cooling, and industrial systems. Coursework covers blueprint reading, pipe fabrication and welding techniques, system installation, and testing procedures, combining classroom instruction with hands-on shop practice. The program provides the technical training block of the steamfitter-pipefitter apprenticeship, preparing students to register as apprentices and progress toward journeyperson certification. Because practical training requires respirator use, students with facial hair must be clean-shaven for fit testing and whenever a respirator is worn. Graduates find work with mechanical and industrial contractors, shipyards, and manufacturing and processing facilities across Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond.
