Overview

The Bachelor of Education in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) trains future ESL teachers, combining coursework on the sounds and grammatical structure of English, comparative grammar of other major languages, and teaching techniques for children, adolescents and adults with practicum placements where students observe experienced teachers and lead lessons as a student teacher. The Specialization requires 120 credits; a 24-credit Minor is also offered, along with an integrated path into the MA in Applied Linguistics with up to 12 transferable credits. Admission also requires a program-specific application, reference forms and an interview. Full-time study takes a minimum of four years, with classes held on the Sir George Williams campus in Montreal and admission offered for the Fall term only. Graduates are eligible for teaching certification from Quebec's Ministère de l'Éducation et de l'Enseignement supérieur.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Quebec CEGEP applicants need a 25 overall average; Ontario and other Canadian high-school applicants need a B- overall average; IB Diploma applicants need 27 points overall; university transfer applicants need a B- average. Admission also requires a program-specific application, reference forms and an interview. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet TESL's own English-proficiency minimum: TOEFL iBT 90, IELTS Academic 7.0, or Duolingo English Test 120. Admission is offered for the Fall term only, with applications due March 1.
