Overview
This course gives students a thorough grounding in the skills and knowledge needed to safely operate an anesthetic delivery unit, including its ventilators, gas monitors, gas scavengers, breathing systems and vaporizers. Competencies are taught, reinforced and assessed against the 2016 Anesthesia Assistant National Competency Framework, which sets out what is required for credentialing and entry to practice. Delivery for this course follows a didactic classroom format.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Post-diploma program listed as open to domestic applicants only. Entry requires either a Respiratory Therapy Ontario College Advanced Diploma with current registration with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario, or a BScN or nursing diploma held alongside Certificate of Competence registration that is current with Ontario's College of Nurses; plus 2,000 hours worked in the last three years as a Registered Respiratory Therapist or Registered Nurse in critical care settings such as the operating room, ICU, CCU or post-anaesthesia care unit; plus a resume and cover letter setting out that experience. English at degree and graduate-certificate level: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band under 6.0, TOEFL iBT 5 overall with no band under 4.5, PTE Academic 58 with no band under 50, CAEL 70 with 60 per band, Duolingo 120 with no sub-score under 105, Cambridge English 176, LanguageCert Academic 70. The selection cut-off is 1 April, not the college-wide 1 February; after it, applicants are taken first-come, first-served until the program fills, with preference for Ontario permanent residents and achievement in the requirements. Post-admission items include evidence of good health, a police record check with vulnerable sector screening, and a signed placement agreement.
