Fanshawe College's Sheet Metal Apprentice programme is a block release apprenticeship for the Sheet Metal Worker (308A) trade, leading to an Ontario College Certificate. Apprentices learn to fabricate, assemble and install sheet metal products and ductwork, working with punches, drill presses, shears and brakes alongside other trade tools and equipment. Training combines paid, on-the-job work experience with a sponsoring employer with periods of in-class instruction delivered at Fanshawe in block format rather than through continuous semesters, covering the trade theory and applied skills required to progress through the apprenticeship. Classroom blocks are scheduled around the employer-sponsored, on-the-job portion of the apprenticeship, which forms the large majority of the required training time. Admission, sponsorship and progression through the apprenticeship are administered through Skilled Trades Ontario's registration system rather than Fanshawe's standard academic application process, and applicants cannot apply to the programme directly through ontariocolleges.ca.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This is an apprenticeship programme and cannot be applied to through ontariocolleges.ca. Applicants must first secure a sponsor/employer in the sheet metal trade and then complete a registered training agreement through Skilled Trades Ontario; Fanshawe's classroom blocks are scheduled once the apprentice is registered and called forward by their employer.
