Cert in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) Technician (Distance Education)

The Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) Technician program is a 32-week, part-time certificate delivered fully online as distance education, leading to a George Brown College certificate. It provides an introduction to PLCs and their practical applications in a plant or manufacturing system, covering discrete and analog control devices and operation of various PLC control systems. Learning materials are delivered as downloadable files across 19 modules combining text, audio, 2D and 3D animations and computer-based testing, together with PLCLogix 500 simulation software, which emulates the Rockwell RSLogix 500 series and lets students design, test and debug ladder logic programs using timers, counters, sequencers and math functions. The software includes more than 250 pre-built lab projects across 11 simulated manufacturing environments, such as batch mixing, bottling, elevator, silo and warehouse door control. Enrolment is open year-round with no fixed completion schedule, though typical completion takes about 32 weeks. Students who have completed the PLC Technician II program are exempted from 7 modules. The program requires only a personal computer and internet access, and prior PLC experience is helpful but not required. Graduates are prepared for roles such as PLC system maintenance technician, designer, installer and operator in industrial automation and controls.
