Overview
This four-year honours degree program at Humber Polytechnic combines music performance with recording technology, songwriting, composition and entrepreneurial business studies across jazz, pop, R&B, Latin and world-music styles. Students take private lessons and ensemble work on their own instrument alongside group classes in ear training, music theory, improvisation, production and music history. After a shared set of core music courses in the first two years, students choose electives such as arranging, composition, advanced improvisation, film scoring, production techniques, songwriting, ethnomusicology and pedagogy while continuing to build instrumental and performance skills. Admission Requirements: Direct entry requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or accepted equivalent, including Grade 12 English (ENG4U or equivalent) at a minimum of 65 per cent, five further Grade 12 U or M courses, and an overall minimum admission grade point average of 65 per cent; mature-student status or college/university transfer status is accepted in place of the secondary-school route. An audition and a theory-and-ear-training test are also required: the audition is on the applicant's chosen instrument per Humber's published requirements, and the theory/ear-training test is completed and submitted through the Applicant Portal. The English-language requirement here is Humber's institution-wide English Language Proficiency Policy at the Bachelor's Degree band: IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 84 with a minimum of 21 in each skill, PTE Academic 58-60, Duolingo English Test 115 or above, or CAEL 60 overall with a Writing score of 60. A Canadian citizen or permanent resident schooled outside Canada must first have their credentials assessed - ICAS course-by-course for a secondary transcript, WES for post-secondary study.
