Program details

Overview

Music with Ensemble Option is a Major program offered jointly by the Faculty of Arts & Science and the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto St. George campus, leading to an Honours Bachelor of Arts. It follows the same Research Stream or Creative Practice Stream structure as the standard Music Major, but requires 8.0 credits, one more than the base program, to accommodate a structured ensemble-performance component. Enrolment requires students to have completed at least 4.0 credits and pass a short admissions test on the rudiments of Western music theory (Research Stream) or submit a performance video or portfolio of creative work alongside the theory test (Creative Practice Stream), then pass an interview held annually in April and May. Students pursuing the Ensemble Option must also pass an additional audition-interview for ensemble placement.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six subjects at the 4U/M level, including English (ENG4U/EAE4U); the co-op component of Grade 12 courses is not used for admission. Enrolment follows the Music Major process: students must have completed at least 4.0 credits, pass the program's music theory admissions test or submit a portfolio or video for their chosen stream, and pass an interview held annually in April and May. Students pursuing the Ensemble Option must also pass an additional audition-interview for ensemble placement.
