Program details

Overview

Keyano College's Heavy Equipment Technician Apprenticeship is a four-year Alberta apprenticeship program leading to a Journeyperson Certificate and Advanced Diploma, with the option to challenge the Red Seal exam for interprovincial certification. Each year combines eight weeks of classroom-based technical training with a minimum of 1,560 hours of paid, employer-based workplace training. Coursework and on-the-job training cover the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of heavy equipment and vehicles, including diesel engines, tracked and rubber-tired equipment, ground-engaging equipment, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and powertrains, across Alberta's construction, energy, and transportation sectors. Students learn to interpret work orders and technical manuals, diagnose faults and malfunctions, adjust and repair or replace components, and test repaired equipment against manufacturer specifications. The program is delivered in person, combining institutional instruction with structured on-the-job apprenticeship experience with an employer. Graduates who complete all technical training periods and workplace hours, and pass the required examinations, receive a Journeyperson Certificate in the trade.
