Program details
Overview
Lakehead University's Visual Arts program, offered through the Department of Visual Arts at the Thunder Bay campus, develops technical and conceptual skills in studio-based art practice. Students work across drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics, combining studio work with art history and critical theory. The department's ceramics studio provides instruction in mold-making, surface treatment, wheel throwing, and hand building. Final-year coursework covers professional practices including grant writing, exhibiting within gallery systems, promotion and marketing, and writing an artist statement. The program is available as a three-year Bachelor of Arts or a four-year Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts, with concurrent-education options combining Visual Arts with a Bachelor of Education over five or six years. The department maintains links with local galleries and arts organizations and holds an annual juried student art exhibition.
