Overview
Lakehead University's Collaborative Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program is delivered in partnership with the University of Guelph's Ontario Veterinary College, training northern Ontario students to become licensed veterinarians. The program is designed to serve rural, remote, and Indigenous communities and admits 20 northern students each year. Students enrol in the Rural Community Practice Stream of the Ontario Veterinary College's DVM curriculum, which emphasizes care for common agricultural and companion animals and the realities of rural veterinary practice, alongside hands-on and community-based learning through practicums and experiential placements. The program leads to a fully accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree over four years. Beginning with the 2025 cohort, students complete all four years at the University of Guelph; from 2027, once Lakehead's facilities are complete, the Northern Cohort will begin the program in Thunder Bay before completing it in Guelph.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents and residents of northern Ontario, having lived in a designated northern district for the 12 consecutive months before January 1 of the application year (not including time enrolled in post-secondary study). Academic eligibility requires at least two years of full-time university study and completion of the required prerequisite courses.
