Program details
Overview
The PhD in Mechanical Engineering trains independent researchers to meet demand in academia and industry for highly qualified personnel in mechanical and mechatronics engineering. The program combines formal course work with dissertation research: candidates work under the direct supervision of a faculty member, review the current state of technical knowledge in an engineering research area, and devise an original research initiative that contributes to the field. Faculty-supported research areas include mechatronics, vibration control, diagnostics, prognostics, alternative energy, energy harvesting, engines, dynamics, and design and manufacturing. Students carry out their research project with objectivity and care and are expected to document and publish their results in internationally recognized journals and conferences. Admission requires a four-year bachelor's degree and a master's degree, and applicants must be graduates of a recognized university showing evidence of scholarly achievement; meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. The program is offered at Lakehead University's Thunder Bay campus and awards a Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering, Mechanical stream.
