Program details
Overview
The Master of Environmental Studies (MES) at Lakehead University is an interdisciplinary program offered jointly by the Departments of Anthropology and Geography and the Environment. It trains students to investigate, understand, and appreciate issues of environment and culture, including environmental equity, combining perspectives from the social sciences and environmental studies. The program is thesis-based and delivered on Lakehead's Thunder Bay campus. Students work with faculty supervisors on original research examining the relationships between human communities and their environments, drawing on anthropological and geographical methods. Full-time students are expected to complete all degree requirements, including coursework, comprehensive components, and a thesis, within six terms of continuous registration. Admission requires a four-year bachelor's degree or equivalent, normally with at least second-class (B) standing based on the applicant's most recent 20 half courses. The MES prepares graduates for further doctoral study or for careers in environmental research, policy, planning, and resource management roles that require an understanding of both social and ecological dimensions of environmental issues.
